5/10/2023 0 Comments I have a dream speech textMartin Luther King Jr.’s anaphoral phrase “I have a dream.” Anaphoral phrases are rarely longer than a few words (lengthy, repeated phrases can be confusing to readers). It can also involve several words, like Dr. Specifically, an anaphora can be as short as a single word, such as I, when, or and. What is anaphora?Īs a rhetorical device, anaphora is “the repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of consecutive sentences, poetry stanzas, or clauses within a sentence.” Rhetorical devices-which include metaphor and hyperbole-are used to make a point when you’re speaking. Learn about some of his most powerful words. In fact, anaphora is a rhetorical device often favored by poets … and that’s why MLK Jr.’s speech lives among the greatest speeches. King uses anaphora to highlight the difference between how things are and how he hopes they will be. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi … will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. King uses the anaphoral phrase, “I have a dream,” to start eight consecutive sentences: Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. One of the most famous anaphora examples comes from Dr. Politicians and political figures often use anaphora in speeches to emphasize their points. 5/10/2023 0 Comments Hannah templerHer work as a cover artist-with clients like Dark Horse, IDW, Valiant, BOOM! Here’s the definitive, reader-voted tally of the most memorable movie characters – the beautiful, the powerful, the heroic, the despicable, the hilarious and the downright barking, most iconic film characters to ever grace the screen. When Empire asked you to vote for the greatest movie characters of all time, you responded in your thousands – with pure-hearted goodies, uncompromising villains, and everything in between. But while some roles feel merely functional, the best movie characters can transform a film – offering complex moralities, or inspiring personal betterment, standing up against the odds, fighting for what’s right as stalwart heroes, or causing mayhem as antiheroes and villains. I mean, think about it – they’d just be abstract shots of landscapes and locations otherwise. Movies would be nothing without the characters that inhabit them. 5/10/2023 0 Comments Artistic license by elle piersonIt can also be described as another variation on the same theme. What is a trope? Urban Dictionary explains it best I think: “Despite the erroneous definitions already published here, tropeon the interwebs really refers to an often overused plot device. I decided to do a sort of Trope Tuesday piece where I will be talking about many tropes and recommend you all some of my favorites that fit. I adore them and I always tend to find my favorite ones in romance books so I can enjoy them more. Romantic tropes are everywhere, and they are fabulous. You can also see them in shows, movies, plays, etc. To explain a little about what this post will be about, I’m taking the intro I did for the last one: In every romance book you read there are tropes or archetypes. Cohen’s marital drama morphs into a psychological thriller, and a last-minute twist set into motion much earlier in the narrative is brilliant. Who is she? The reader knows Sasha had a horrible upbringing, but Hannah’s may have been even worse. She is a Writer-in-Residence at Kingston University and lives in North London with her partner and three (nearly) grown children, plus. Peppered throughout are pages from a girl who exhibits signs of a dual personality as a result of her mother’s abuse. A late starter to fiction (and to other things besides) she has now written four novels:The Mistress's Revenge, The War of the Wives. As Josh and Hannah try to remain neutral, financial worries, intimacy problems, and other dilemmas strain their marriage and damage their careers. Sasha’s refusal to accept that her marriage is irreparably broken morphs into bitterness and vindictiveness. Dan’s efforts to minimize his betrayal just makes things worse. When Dan decides to leave his wife, Sasha, for a 24-year-old model, their closest friends, Josh and Hannah (whose four-year-old is their own little girl’s best friend), become part of the drama. Cohen ( War of the Wives) captures divorce with pin-point accuracy in this unsettling read, where ugliness reigns, amicability flies out the window, and accusations, broken promises, financial shenanigans, and hatred dominate. 5/9/2023 0 Comments Into the darkest cornerHaynes uses alternating narratives to burrow into a harrowing story: There’s the 2003 Catherine, meeting Lee, falling in love, then descending into hell and the 2007 Cathy, struggling to rebuild her life. But the real horror, she explains later, was that “nobody, not even my best friend, believed me.” Lee gets three years in prison and Catherine, now suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder, moves to London to start a new life. Manipulative and controlling, he grows more and more violent until he nearly kills her. “The world doesn’t exist for him outside you.” But instead of every woman’s dream, blond, blue-eyed Lee turns out to be this woman’s nightmare. “Isn’t he just what we’ve all always wanted?” one of them asks her. When she hooks up with handsome and mysterious Lee she seems to have it all - at least her envious girlfriends think so. For the record, I’m the one who sets the categories and they’re largely based on publicity around the books combined with where they are set (Omotoso’s wonderful book is set in South Africa, while the internet calls her a ‘South-African based writer’ who was born in Barbados and grew up in Nigeria. Of these, ‘ Cockroaches’ by Scholastique Mukasonga is Rwandan, ‘ The First Wife’ by Chiziane Paulina is Mozambique and ‘ The Woman Next Door’ by Yewande Omotoso is South African. This blog is a rather shameful example I don’t specifically seek out stories from Africa and the result is that I’ve only reviewed eight novels categorised as African Literature. Even with increasing representation in publishing, there still seem to be hierarchies for what stories are easily available. There are so many barriers to publishing novels, especially novels from less-often heard voices, I always assume that anything that makes it into the bookshops must be pretty exceptional. 5/9/2023 0 Comments Read burn by suzanne wrightEven if it will mean letting the demon inside him rise and wreak the havoc it was created to make.
